Ladies only!!! A freebie side effect you don't want

September 20th, 2006 at 03:40 am

I warned ya...

Over the past few months I've had a problem Down There that I never had happen before in my life. The irritation comes and goes without any treatment beyond switching to Dove soap and being patient. It's not really serious enough to run to the doctor with, but darned uncomfortable--so I started researching online. To my surprise, the probable culprit is Always brand feminine hygiene pads!

Note that the journal article came out in the 90's, but the advice to avoid the Always brand is still being given today.

I don't know about you, but I only started using this brand recently, after a series of offers at different stores, a Catalina and a sample that came with a coupon. Let me tell you, if you're sensitive to whatever's in them.... well, they couldn't PAY me to use them again.

I'm emptying my stockpile into the trash even if I have to pay full price for another brand. No use donating them and causing someone else discomfort.

I know what you mean. I bought an off brand tampon. Itchy in an unscratchable sort of way. yeeeee.

As a long time sufferer from fun stuff like this:

As little soap there as you can. Frankly if you are showering you don't need much soap. A hand held shower is wonderful for this. Cleanliness is next to godliness right?

No bubble baths, nothing scented there.

I've even switched to Instead. I won't go into it here as any guys reading might get too much of an education.

The thought of using Always has me cringing. They put so many chemicals in them so you smell pretty *shudder* Thank you for tossing them.

I once worked for an OBGYN and one other top causes is your laundry detergent, softners and dryer sheets. We always warned people of these. There are even more chemicals in them now because everyone wants products that "smell good".
The best thing to do is still use your regular products for all your other clothing, but wash undergarmets in dye free detergent. Also, take all the clean undergarments and wash them in hot water alone, nothing else. This will rid them of all residual chemicals.
The Dr. also said for really umcomfortable irritation, soak in a hot bath with baking soda. Yes, it's not the greatest smelling bath, but it does work.
I hope everything is better..It's no fun, I know too.

NEVER comprimisE on feminine products! my mother told me this eons ago when I first started needing them, and I have always held to it, except once, generic not always, but I dumped the whole box. (well minus a half dozen)

I suffered for many months a few years back of EXACTLY what you described...and then it just went away....now you got me wondering and I have not bought Always in quite a while thanks to some other great coupons...I wonder...hmmm! Well, I wont be testing to see...thats for darn sure!

Wow, I am shocked by this, and so sorry you've had to go through it! I've used Always for 16 years without a problem...were they scented? Yikes.

Why do I always rubber neck and gawk when it says "Ladies only" only to regret it later?

It may be worth donating them, if you haven't already thrown them out. Seems like this problem doesn't affect everyone, and feminine products are SO EXPENSIVE, I'm sure that a shelter or some such place would welcome them.

Sorry to hear about the problem you had...not much worse than that!
